BILTMORE HOTEL

In 1924, young Merrick joined forces with Biltmore hotel magnate John Bowman to build a great hotel which not only serve as a hostelry to the crowds which were thronging to Coral Gables but also would serve as a center of sports and fashion. In its heydays, The Biltmore received special guests from Europe and Hollywood. The frequent guests were the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Ginger Rogers, Judy Garland, Bing Crosby and assorted Roosevelts and Vanderbilts.

During the World War II, The Biltmore was converted as the Army Air Forces Regional Hospital to serve the wounded army. After the World War II, the City of Coral Gables gained control of The Biltmore in the early 70's through the Historic Monuments Act and Legacy of Park Program. The Biltmore remained unoccupied for almost ten years. In 1983, the City of Coral Gables invested about $47 million to restructure the hotel. After four years in renovation, The Biltmore hotel fully operated in December 31, 1987 as a first class hotel and resort. However, in 1990 the hotel was closed due to financial difficulties. In June 1992, a Multinational consortium led by Seaway Hotels Corporation, a Florida hotel management company, officially became the new owners of The Biltmore hotel.

Today, The Biltmore hotel offers 42,000 square feet of meeting space to support 275 guest rooms and suites, two additional ballrooms and 14 private meeting rooms, plus outdoor terraces and courtyards for receptions.
